Survivors of Brain Injury

WHAT IS BRAIN INJURY?

Below are terms that may be used to classify the type of Brain Injury sustained?

What is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a form of acquired brain injury, occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue.  Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain (National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke website)

What is Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)?

Acquired brain injury covers all situations in which brain injury has occurred since birth, and includes traumatic brain injury as well as tumour, stroke, brain haemorrhage and encephalitis, to name a few. The effects are often very similar to those of traumatic brain injury, but there are key differences that make treating and coping with acquired brain injury quite different.
