There is a commitment to help reintegrate the residents by involving them in supported work and leisure pursuits to enable them to relearn the skills they have lost and offer opportunities to gain further independence.

The Child Brain Injury Trust Northampton was set up when a parent discovered there was a lack of local information and support for families and carers who had experience of a child with a brain injury.

CBIT aims to increase the awareness of the effect child brain injury can have on the individual and those around them, they provide a number of services including; support groups, information, advice and training.

They provide opportunities for parents and carers in similar situations to exchange their own experiences, which helps the parents and carers gain support from one another and show that they are not alone in what they are going through.

Different Strokes is a registered charity providing a free service to younger stroke survivors throughout the UK. They are run by stroke survivors for stroke survivors, for active self help and mutual support.

Different Strokes helps stroke survivors of working age to optimise their recovery, take control of their own lives and regain as much independence as possible by offering ‘rehabilitative services’, information and advice.

Different Strokes organises weekly exercise classes, and provides practical, easy to use information for the recovering stroke survivor. Offers a ‘Stroke Line’ telephone service so that younger stroke survivors can speak to other younger stroke survivors, keeping stroke survivors informed, through newsletters, an interactive website and other means, of developments relevant to them.

Different Strokes is run by younger stroke survivors for younger stroke survivors. Different Strokes also provides an important voice for younger stroke survivors to Government, service providers and funders, fighting for better standards and improved understanding.

We aim to evolve new services as and when they are needed.

ICS provide specialist support to enable patients to live in the community and in their own homes. ICS support patients with brain injury along with complex physical and social needs, including learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. A dedicated community team will set up and manage bespoke packages of care for both children and adults. They support discharge from hospital, provide a rapid response service for breakdown in services and can also assist with respite care and short breaks. ICS is 3 star CQC rated.

ICS provide cover for all care needs in the community setting, all packages of care are individual and carers and nurses are specifically recruited following on from an individual assessment of needs. ICS can provide most languages and this would be incorporated into the bespoke care package.

ICS is a national organisation that provides care throughout the UK for people of all ages. Referrals can be made either through self or professionally. There is no waiting list, ICS will either provide a service immediately or will build a specific care package. Cost will vary dependent on the services required.

St Andrews National Brain Injury Centre Provides specialised acquired brain injury neurorehabilitation with expertise in management of behaviour and emotional problems caused by brain injury. Physical and cognitive rehabilitation is provided alongside neurobehavioural programmes and structure. Full care pathway from admission wards through to community based unit and group home. Specialised men’s and women’s service, with mixed gender long term service.

Types of needs covered: The service is able to address the full range of physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural needs that can arise following traumatic brain injury. Contact is maintained with carers/relatives throughout admission and there is close cooperation with the Placement Funders (typically Primary Care Trusts) to explore discharge home or on to appropriate long term support.

They operate a transport and minibus service between 8.30am – 5.30pm, which allows individuals who find it difficult to access public transport and do not have their own transport, to make essential local journeys for only a small cost. This helps to maintain the individual’s independence and contact with the local community which otherwise they may have been unable to access.

Each club organises a diverse programme of activities for children and adults of all abilities – arts and crafts, quizzes and games, speakers, sports, discos, days out, group holidays and usually meets once a week. The clubs cater for juniors (under 18) and/or seniors. The clubs all offer the opportunity for everyone to get together, enjoy each other’s company and have fun, providing valuable support for families and carers who can sometimes feel isolated. Siblings belong to the same club and families are able to enjoy events and activities together.

There is a network of nearly 200 clubs throughout England and Wales for all age ranges, offering activities and holidays which members can share and enjoy together.

Phab aims to promote and encourage the self confidence and independence of young people of all abilities through a range of diverse projects. Funding special short breaks – inclusive experiences for disabled and non-disabled children and young people to share in a full range of

Help and information can be difficult to obtain when a family member sustains a brain injury following for example, a road traffic accident, assault, or illness. At Kemsley, National Centre for Brain Injury, which provides specialised rehabilitation for people with a brain injury, staff have worked with family members and partners to share knowledge and offer opportunities for support. We are now able to offer support to family members from Northampton and the surrounding area in the form of a monthly meeting held at Kemsley. Between 7 and 9pm it offers an opportunity to meet other people in a similar position to yourself, that is, following a brain injury to a family member. In addition, expertise from professionals in rehabilitation, for example, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Social Work and Occupational Therapy can be made available to offer information and insights about life after brain injury and ideas to improve coping.
